Athletic training Pre-participation screenings

All students who participate in organized athletics must complete a sports fitness screening as required by the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association (WIAA). The screening must be obtained prior to participating in any practice, scrimmage or game. Marshfield Clinic Sports Medicine may provide comprehensive fitness screenings at a location near you.

WIAA policy requires that a pre-participation screening be performed every two years and signed by a licensed physician, surgeon, nurse practitioner or physician assistant. Forms are valid for two calendar years from the date it was taken and the parent or adult athlete must sign an alternate year form for the second year. For a screening to be valid for the following school year, it also must be completed after April 1.

In late spring and summer, some Marshfield Clinic Sports Medicine locations provide comprehensive sports fitness screenings. This service also can be provided as part of a routine well-child visit. Parents may schedule a routine well-child visit with the athlete's pediatrician or primary care provider.

Preparing for your pre-participation sports screening

The pre-participation sports screening is general in nature and is intended only to determine a participant's readiness for physical activity as required by the WIAA. This screening is not a comprehensive physical examination, and is not intended to be a substitute for routine health care provided by your physician. The screening is designed to fulfill only the requirements set forth by the WIAA prior to your participation in athletic activities sanctioned by this organization.

  • Bring the completed WIAA form and health history form. Forms must be completed and signed by a parent or legal guardian prior to registration and completion of the screening.

  • Female athletes should wear shorts and a one-piece swimming suit with a T-shirt. Male athletes should wear shorts and a T-shirt. All athletes should wear athletic shoes, not sandals or boots.

  • Drink no caffeinated beverages (soda, coffee, tea or energy drinks) for at least four hours before your scheduled screening time.

  • Avoid heavy exercise for at least two hours before your scheduled screening time.
