In cooperation with physicians and other allied health care providers, athletic trainers function as integral members of the athletic health care team within the school setting, assuring all injuries are cared for and promoting a safe return to play.

Athletic trainers in Wisconsin must be certified by the independent Board of Certification, Inc. (BOC) and are required by the BOC to abide by Standards of Practice. Athletic trainers also are required to be licensed medical providers in the state of Wisconsin. This certification and licensure require that individuals complete a university course of study leading to a bachelor's or master's degree, complete an extensive internship, and take an extensive examination that tests their skills in the clinical proficiencies of athletic training.

To make sure athletic trainers stay up-to-date on new information, the BOC and the state licensing board demand athletic trainers complete a number of continuing education units each year.

Athletic trainers also are trained in advanced first aid and CPR/AED and must be re-certified every year.

Concussion guidelines

Parents, coaches and children involved in organized youth sports are required by Wisconsin state law to receive information about the signs, symptoms and risks of sports related to concussion. Learn more about concussions in amateur athletics.

In the event of injury

If you are concerned about an injury that your child has suffered during athletics, contact the athletic trainer assigned to your child's team or school.

Your child's coach or athletic director will know who is assigned to your child and how to contact him or her.

Pre-participation screenings

All students who participate in school-organized athletics must complete a sports fitness as required by the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association (WIAA). The screening must be obtained prior to participating in any practice, scrimmage or game. Marshfield Clinic Sports Medicine may provide comprehensive sports fitness screenings at a location near you.
