George J. Brown, M.D., FACP, has joined Marshfield Clinic Health System Board of Directors with his term beginning in 2019.
Dr. Brown was President and Chief Executive Officer of Legacy Health, Portland, Oregon, and in that leadership role for nearly 10 years prior to retiring in June 2018.
Legacy Health, a local not-for-profit health care delivery system, serves Oregon and southwest Washington. It includes eight hospitals, more than 70 primary care, specialty and urgent care clinics as well as almost 3,000 providers with Legacy Health Partners. Legacy, with over 13,700 employees, is a joint venture partner in Managed HealthCare Northwest, a major regional PPO.
Dr. Brown is on the Oregon-based PacificSource Health Plans Board of Directors. This organization serves members in Montana, Idaho, Washington and Oregon.
Prior to Legacy Health, Dr. Brown was Chief Operating Officer for MultiCare Health System, Tacoma, Washington, a not-for-profit health care system in western Washington State.
Dr. Brown’s career includes 26 years of service in the U.S. Army, having retired from active duty in 1998 as a Brigadier General.
His Army experience includes Commanding General, Madigan Army Medical Center, Lead Agent Region 11 and Commander, Western Regional Medical Command, Fort Lewis, Washington; and Commander, Walter Reed Army Medical Center, Washington, D.C., the largest military medical center and health care system in the Department of Defense. Also, Dr. Brown was Commander, Blanchfield Army Hospital, Fort Campbell, Kentucky; Commander, Letterman Army Institute of Medical Research, Presidio of San Francisco, California; and Commander, U.S. Army Hospital, Berlin, West Germany.
Dr. Brown has earned many awards and honors, from recognition in education, awards related to his medical career and achievements in the U.S. Army, including the U.S. Army Distinguished Service Medal.
Nationally, he has been recognized by Modern Healthcare magazine and Becker’s Hospital Review magazine multiple times for his health care leadership.
Dr. Brown is a Fellow in the American College of Physicians; and member in the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society and American College of Physician Executives. He is certified by the National Board of Medical Examiners, American Board of Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology and the American Board of Medical Management.
He earned his medical degree at Boston University School of Medicine, Boston, Massachusetts. He completed an internal medicine residency at Fitzsimons Medical Center, Denver, Colorado; and a gastroenterology fellowship at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, Washington, D.C. He also is a graduate of the U.S. Army War College, Carlisle Barracks, Pennsylvania. He graduated from Hampton University, Hampton, Virginia, with a bachelor of arts degree.
