Reflections from community leaders

As he steps down as the inaugural chair of Marshfield Clinic's Development Committee, Terry Frankland is grateful for the opportunity.

Committee

IIt has given me a wonderful chance to understand even more about what Marshfield Clinic does, beyond the day to day care of patients," he said. "We took a tour of the Laird Center for Medical Research and got to understand the research they're doing that will benefit patients all over."

Frankland is the president of V & H Heavy Trucks, Inc. in Marshfield, and is passionate about cancer research, especially if it can help kids with cancer.

"The committee on two occasions heard from parents whose children have cancer, and I don't know how you can hear that and not be affected," he said. "I watched people I know, including some big, macho guys, who had tears in their eyes. How can you sit there and not become emotional?"

Al Nystrom, the incoming Development Committee chair, has been highly involved in the community and his views about the committee reflect that.

"The Development Committee supports the Clinic's philanthropic efforts by telling Marshfield Clinic's story in our communities," he noted. "It's a great story to tell. The Clinic's mission of providing affordable health care to rural communities resonates with our families, friends, and associates. Our communities value the Clinic's world class medical care and its cutting-edge medical research.

"It is an honor for us to contribute to the Clinic's mission by raising awareness and financial support for these important works," said Nystrom, president - Marshfield Group of BMO Harris Bank.

Both Frankland and Nystrom have been actively involved as leaders on the committee, according to Chief Development Officer Teri Wilczek. In addition, they and other committee members have been willing to work as hosts at events, cultivate relationships, present "Shining Star" pins to providers earning that recognition from patients, make thank-you calls to donors and participate in donor visits. Whatever support is needed, they happily provide it.

"Their leadership, community involvement and support have been valuable to our efforts," said Teri Wilczek, chief Development officer. "Each member brings unique talents and interests that help advance philanthropy at Marshfield Clinic."

Members include representatives from throughout the Clinic's broad service area from Minocqua to Stevens Point, and from Weston to Rice Lake.
