The legacy of many, and a special birthday greeting

In each issue of BenchMarks, we will be celebrating the legacy of an individual, couple or family who has made a special gift to Marshfield Clinic through their estate.

Sharing the stories of these living and deceased members of the Doege Legacy Society affords us the opportunity to honor and thank them, as well as to demonstrate the lasting impact of their gifts.

Pearl Vorland received the Legacy of Philanthropy Award at Marshfield Clinic’s 2012 Spirit of Giving celebration.

In the summer issue of BenchMarks, the inaugural "Celebrating Legacies" honored Peter and Beverly Bauer. Peter was a long-time Clinic employee whose legacy includes his pioneering work in the use of electronic medical records at Marshfield Clinic. Peter and Beverly will also be remembered for their support through their estate of the work of the Marshfield Clinic Research Institute.

Today, we remember the 200-plus deceased members of the Doege Legacy Society, who included gifts in their estates in furtherance of the Clinic's research, education and patient care mission.  We also celebrate more than 150 living members of the Doege Legacy Society, whose future estate gifts will help define the Clinic's legacy as well as their own.  Thank you all for the tremendous impact your gifts have had, and will have, on the lives of others who will benefit from your generosity.

In upcoming issues we will celebrate the legacy of some amazing people, including a couple whose gift helped other patients receive care they otherwise could not afford, a grandson of one of the Clinic founding physicians who supported the preservation of the Clinic's rich history, farmers who supported the work of the Clinic's National Farm Medicine Center, and a physician who trained at Marshfield Clinic now interested in supporting educational efforts for others entering the health care field. We hope you enjoy the stories of these wonderful, generous people.

Speaking of wonderful and generous people, Pearl Vorland of Colby celebrated her 100th birthday in November. We extend our best wishes to Pearl on this joyous occasion.
