Scholarship represents one of three triune qualities of a consummate internist: Clinician, teacher and scholar.
Our residency program endorses the Accreditation Council on Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) requirement that both faculty and residents must participate actively in scholarly activity.
ACGME defines scholarship as:
- "Discovery … peer reviewed funding or publication of original research in peer reviewed journals."
- "Dissemination … review articles or book chapters."
- "Application … publication or presentation at … meetings, for example case reports or clinical series."
- "Participation … in clinical discussions, rounds, journal club, and research conferences that promote a spirit of inquiry and scholarship."
We pursue these scholarship venues in many ways.
Marshfield Clinic Research Institute (MCRI)
MCRI represents one of the country's largest private research centers.
It is now in its fifth decade of supporting Marshfield Clinic's mission of serving patients through accessible high quality health care, research and education.
MCRI has five research centers, 30 Ph.D. and M.D. scientists and more than 200 other staff. In addition, more than 200 physicians throughout Marshfield Clinic Health System have active research projects.
Additionally, MCRI provides research services, such as biostatistics, biomedical informatics, study design and publication support.

Grand Rounds
We require residents to present a
grand rounds type presentation on an annual basis. This includes attending physician/mentor oversight, support via our Medical Graphics and Information Systems departments and feedback regarding your efforts.
Journal Club
In Journal Club, you'll find a monthly opportunity for detailed discussion of current literature, emphasizing study design, statistical analysis and interpretation of data. Each resident presents an article once a year, with faculty support for article choice and presentation preparation.
Both practicing clinicians as well as Research Institute PhD staff attend to provide a well-rounded dialogue.
