Heart Care (Cardiology)

Our cardiology team is driven to bring quality care close to home and to deliver the best possible outcome for our patients.

Our non-invasive cardiologists provide care throughout a patient’s journey with a focus on determining the best medical or surgical treatment available. At Marshfield Clinic Health System, patients have access to specialists who offer unparalleled treatment throughout the heart of Wisconsin.

We diagnose and treat a variety of heart conditions and use cutting-edge technology and treatments to deliver care with compassion.

What makes us different

We don’t wait for advances in cardiovascular care, we help create them. We handle more complex cases than any other heart care program in the region, while ensuring quality heart care is never far from home.

Heart failure treatment with BAROSTIM implants

We recently became the first Health System in Wisconsin and only the second in the Midwest to implant what is deemed as the world's first neuromodulation device for heart failure treatment – Barostim Activation Therapy (BAT). BAT is intended to better treat you by restoring balance of the nerves and ultimately gaining control of the cardiovascular system. The treatment is the first heart failure treatment that directly targets the nerves instead of the heart.

Treatments

Emergency or planned, our expert team is ready to treat a wide array of complex cardiac and vascular conditions, such as blockages in the heart, structural heart and irregular heart rhythms and more with innovative care options.

Angioplasty and Stenting

A slender, long tube is inserted into your wrist or leg through a blood vessel and guided to your heart or other areas in your body. The doctor injects a dye through your arteries for guidance while he performs the stenting procedure.

The catheter has a balloon at the tip which inflates to stretch your artery open and increase blood flow to your heart. A stent (small metal mesh cylinder) is then placed into your vessel so it stays open.

Atherectomy

Cardiologists place a burr or rotary shaver at the tip of a catheter and guide it to the affected area to remove plaque that has built up on the walls of your artery. A laser catheter might be used in some cases to vaporize the plaque.

Balloon Angioplasty

A tiny balloon is inserted and inflated into your blocked artery to create space. The plaque is compressed by the balloon against your artery wall to improve your blood flow. The doctor then removes the balloon after the procedure is completed.

EECP

This can help stimulate blood vessels to develop small branches, creating a natural bypass around narrowed or blocked arteries that cause chest pain.

Embolic Protection elect

Occasionally, if the narrowing that is being treated is in your carotid arteries or in a bypass graft, the doctor will use specialized devices such as filters to prevent the plaque from breaking off and traveling in your blood causing damage.

Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO)

ECMO is a life-support machine that replaces the function of the heart and lungs. ECMO is provided in critical care situations when a patient's heart or lungs are no longer able to support themselves and when all other conventional care options have been exhausted. Our Health System is the only local hospital offering this life-saving treatment and only three others in the entire state to offer ECMO – two are located in Milwaukee and another in Madison.

Heart Failure

Heart failure is when the heart can't pump enough blood to meet the body's needs. Nearly 6 million people in the United States have heart failure and currently there is no cure. However, treatment such as medicines and lifestyle change can help people who have the condition live longer and more active lives.

Implantable Cardioverter-Defibrillators

An implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) is a device placed in patients who have had a cardiac arrest or are at high risk of having one. The ICD is able to monitor a patient’s heart and detect if and when the heart beats abnormally.

Mitraclip

When open heart surgery is too risky, Marshfield Clinic cardiologists offer a less-invasive option for treatment of mitral valve regurgitation.

Pacemakers

A pacemaker is a small device that sends electrical impulses to the heart muscle to keep up a suitable heart rate and rhythm. A pacemaker may also treat fainting spells (syncope), congestive heart failure, and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. We also provide leadless pacemakers to avoid damage to heart valves.

Percutaneous Valve Repair

You have four valves in your heart that control how your blood flows through your heart chambers. Catheters are used to guide devices like clips to your damaged valve through your blood vessels. Doctors then repair your valve so your blood can start flowing properly again using these devices.

TAVR

Transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) is a minimally-invasive procedure to replace a poorly working heart valve. TAVR is an alternative to open-heart surgery, which may be too risky for some patients. With TAVR, a catheter carries a new valve through the blood vessels and through the narrowed valve. The stent that houses the new valve then expands into place, and the new valve starts working right away.

Pulmonary Embolism Response Team (PERT)

PERT allows for the coordinated and expedited treatment of pulmonary embolism with a balanced team of physicians from a variety of specialties. The multi-disciplinary team works to improve outcomes in pulmonary embolism (PE) patients by providing a standard mechanism by rapid assessment of the patients’ risk of PE. When a patient arrives in a hospital emergency room, physicians and staff who suspect PE order a CAT scan to see if the patient has clinical markers that confirm a high, intermediate or low risk of PE.

Echocardiogram

This noninvasive procedure visualizes the heart to assess heart function and size.

3D reconstruction - 3D Printing Lab

Advanced technology is utilized to print cardiac anatomy to help diagnose and plan treatment options.
