Focus area: keeping your child active

Regular physical activity helps build and maintain strong, healthy muscles, bones and joints. It also will improve your child’s self-image, enhance various motor skills and improve quality of sleep. There are numerous ways you can incorporate exercise into your child’s life.

  • Spend time together doing something active like biking, hiking or even just playing in the backyard. Not only will you be doing something active, but you’ll also get the added benefit of spending quality time together. Our wellness blog, Shine365, has more ideas to make fitness fun for the whole family.

  • Start a family activity competition, challenging members to walk as many steps as they can daily or run the furthest. Set different goals for each family member, and add an incentive like a fun trip to the zoo or a day at the pool for when everyone completes his or her goal.
  • Suggest new activities or teams to your child, such as soccer, rock climbing or dancing. Not everyone is drawn to organized sports, so search for different activities for your child to try.
  • Limit screen time to one to two hours per day, including TV, video games or surfing thinternet. Remove TVs from bedrooms and put the computer in a shared space.
