“Nothing is more rewarding than seeing patients make a full recovery after lifesaving brain surgery.”
Dr. Vivek Gonugunta’s neurosurgical practice
focuses on general, pediatric and
cerebrovascular neurosurgery.
He has
special interests in treatment of brain
aneurysms, AVMs and AV fistulas using
a minimally invasive endovascular
approach. He has special expertise
in treatment of stroke by removing
clots or placing stents in blood vessels
of the brain or neck. His interests in
pediatric neurosurgery include repair
of skull deformities, brain tumors and
endoscopic treatment of hydrocephalus.
“This is one of the most challenging
specialties in medicine,” he said of the
endovascular approach. “It requires great
dexterity and knowledge of the human
anatomy.” He said he is gratified by the
response of patients and their families,
who often credit “gifted hands” for the
successful outcomes they experience.
Dr. Gonugunta, who joined Marshfield Clinic Health System in 2009, is one of just a relative handful of doctors in the United States who can perform both invasive and noninvasive vascular surgeries on the brain. He is “on call” on an almost constant basis and values the opportunity to discuss and explain procedures to his patients and their loved ones.
In addition to other brain surgeries, including procedures for tumors,
trauma and hydrocephalus, he also performs complex spinal surgeries for various conditions.
Dr. Gonugunta completed his residency in neurosurgery and advanced fellowships in pediatric neurosurgery and endovascular neurosurgery at the prestigious Cleveland Clinic, Ohio.
