Dr. Edward Fernandez came to Marshfield Clinic in 1996 to help start Ministry Saint Joseph’s Hospital’s Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) – one of just three of its kind in Wisconsin. As director of the PICU, Dr. Fernandez guides, supervises and practices the complex care and management of critically ill children.

“Intensivists make sure that all medical providers are working together and communicating with one another,” Dr. Fernandez said. A single case might require specialists from a wide range of specialties. The native of central India said, “Children are fun to be with and demonstrate a lot of strength in dealing with problems.” Dr. Fernandez said it is important to keep parents well informed and reassure them that their children are receiving the best possible care.

Dr. Fernandez earned his medical degree at the Government Medical College & Hospital, Nagpur, Maharashtra, India, where he also served his internship. He completed residencies at the Government Medical College & Hospital and at the University of Illinois-Advocate Christ Medical Center, Oak Lawn. He completed a fellowship in pediatric intensive care at the University of Minnesota Affiliated Hospitals, Minneapolis.

As chief of staff at Ministry Saint Joseph’s Hospital., Dr. Fernandez represents physicians to the hospital administration. He also serves as clinical assistant professor of clinical pediatrics at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health, Madison.

Dr. Fernandez and his wife, Yvette, have three children. He enjoys working on the family home, fishing and hunting.
