Dr. Adam Atkins has some advice for kids contemplating a career when they grow up. “If you love what you do, you’ll never work a day in your life.” Atkins has turned his lifelong passion for sports into a career as a sports medicine physician. “I am fascinated by the musculoskeletal system,” he says.

A multi-sport athlete in high school, he continues to play ice hockey in a men’s league and competes in triathlons, including the Ironman Wisconsin. Whether it’s golf, soccer, tennis, waterskiing, Atkins stays active when he isn’t treating patients. About the only time he isn’t moving is when he’s glued to a Wisconsin Badger or Green Bay Packer football game.

“I want to be in a position to help people who have similar interests to my own,” Atkins said. “I enjoy helping people work through their ailments so they can return to activities they enjoy. I try to use language that patients can understand and make sure they are well informed about their problem and treatment options.”

Atkins, a Wisconsin native, is thrilled he is practicing sports medicine for Marshfield Clinic Health System in the Chippewa Valley. “Marshfield Clinic Health System is recognized as a Center of Excellence,” he said. “I strive to use my abilities as a sports medicine physician to provide outstanding and compassionate care to my patients.”

Atkins completed a family medicine residency and sports medicine fellowship at Mercy Health System in Janesville, Wisconsin. He utilizes a non-surgical approach to evaluate and treat muscle and joint pain. He is also trained in treating sports-related concussions, and employs ultrasound to diagnose and treat many musculoskeletal conditions.

Atkins and his wife have four children.
