Wound Healing

Helping wounds heal safely.

Nearly 6 million patients in America are affected by chronic wounds, costing the U.S. health care system an estimated $20 billion a year. At Marshfield Clinic Health System, we use the latest techniques to care for chronic wounds.

Specialized care team

Our clinical approach is systematic and focused on rapid healing while also addressing the underlying causes of your wounds. We execute evidence-based protocols to produce consistent, high quality patient outcomes.

You can expect a customized evaluation and treatment followed by education, including nutrition and exercise, to maximize healing. We collaborate with your referring provider to ensure an appropriate plan of care.

Treatment options

We offer treatment options that can help heal acute and chronic wounds, giving you back your quality of life. Treatment options include:

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy

We offer hyperbaric oxygen therapy in certain locations throughout the Health System. It is an advanced treatment option where the patient breathes 100% oxygen under pressure, causing the oxygen to diffuse into the blood plasma. The pressurized environment helps to reduce swelling and discomfort, while providing the body with at least 10 times its normal supply of oxygen to help repair damaged tissue.

Debridement

A member of your care team removes damaged tissue from the wound to decrease infection and promote healing.

Infection control

With our advanced wound care techniques, our clinicians are trained to reduce infections in complex, acute and chronic wounds. We are able to collaborate with Infectious Disease specialists throughout the Health System.

Endovascular revascularization

Endovascular revascularization advances healing in patients by restoring blood flow to the affected limb by removing blockages such as blood clots, calcification and others.

Bioengineered skin substitutes

These advanced cellular-based products are used to accelerate wound healing by mimicking the properties of tissue. Many of these products can be placed during a clinical visit.

Compression therapy

By applying pressure to swollen areas such as ankles and legs, compression therapy increases blood flow and quickens healing. We are able to collaborate with lymphedema specialists throughout the Health System.

Negative pressure wound therapy

Negative pressure wound therapy mimics the effects of a vacuum on your wound to reduce swelling, reduce infection, control drainage and accelerate tissue growth.
