Services

Our surgeons provide expert care and surgeries to improve the quality of your daily life. Whether it’s cosmetic, facial trauma, and jaw and tooth pain or sleep apnea treatment, our expert oral and maxillofacial team uses the latest technology and treatments to provide individualized care and to deliver care with compassion.

Our highly-specialized surgeons can help you with:

Teeth extractions

Tooth extraction procedures are far less painful than ever before, thanks to advancements in technology and anesthetics. In many cases, patients who experience tooth extraction experience little discomfort and only minor bleeding.

Wisdom teeth

Wisdom teeth can cause problems when the teeth erupt too close to existing permanent teeth, causing crowding, improper bites and other problems.

If you are experiencing problems with your wisdom teeth, this could mean they are impacted. Impacted wisdom teeth can be extremely painful and harmful to your oral health. Symptoms include severe discomfort, inflammation and infections.

Patients often have their wisdom teeth extracted to avoid future serious problems. Please visit us for a consult to discuss your individualized care needs.

Facial trauma

Our oral and maxillofacial surgeons treat facial injuries involving the oral tissues, jaws, cheek and nasal bones, eye sockets and forehead Additionally, these surgeons work closely with otolaryngologists (ear-nose-throat physicians) and collaborate other multi-disciplinary surgeons at Marshfield Clinic Health System to bring you the best possible care.

Types of surgeries

We are able to perform a variety of reconstructive and cosmetic surgeries, including:

  • Nasal reconstruction after cancer, including skin grafts, local flaps, forehead flaps and melolabial flaps.
  • Facial reconstruction after cancer
  • Scar revision
  • Skin cancer excision
  • Cosmetic or plastic surgery

Constructive jaw surgery

Constructive jaw surgery is performed to readjust or correct the alignment of your jaw. It can involve your upper jaw, lower jaw or both. Some symptoms that may indicate a need for surgery include difficulty chewing or swallowing, chronic jaw pain, sleep apnea, protruding jaw or a facial injury.

Facial plastic surgery

For individuals looking for cosmetic or reconstructive plastic surgery, our oral and maxillofacial team includes fellowship-trained surgeons who specialize in this type of surgery. They work closely with the otolaryngology, general plastic surgery, dermatology, and head and neck surgery teams to help patients who have a traumatic nasal or facial injury, head and neck cancer, or difficulty breathing through their nose.

Jaw joint disorder (TMJ)

The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is a hinge-like joint located where your jawbone and skull meet. The TMJ allows your jaw to move up and down and chew, among other things. A TMJ disorder can cause pain, stiffness or lack of mobility in your TMJ causing you pain during simple tasks like eating or drinking.

If non-surgical treatments such as a mouth guard don’t improve the pain, TMJ surgery could be suggested by your doctor.

Implants and bone grafting

Dental implants are a long-term solution in the event you lose a tooth. Dental implants look natural and function like a real tooth.

Bone grafting could be a possibility in addition to dental implants to create a solid base for the implants. Bone grafting regenerates lose bone to restore facial contour. At times bone around the jaw begins to erode. Bone from another part of the body is used to support the deteriorated bone around the jaw.

Cancer services

Head and neck cancers can be among the most complex conditions you will go through. Our expert surgeons and oncology team work together to ensure we can offer the most successful treatment possible. Our surgeons offer complex treatment of oral cancers (mouth, lip and tongue), larynx (voice box), pharynx (throat), salivary glands and lymph node cancers.

With fellowship-trained specialized surgeons we provide advanced treatments for tumor removal, reconstruction, radiation therapy and chemotherapy.

Surgery is a common treatment for oral cancer. It’s done to remove as much of the cancer as possible and to hopefully prevent the spread to other areas of the body. Some oral cancers can’t be removed with surgery. Where the tumor is located, size of the tumor are among the factors and sometimes reconstructive surgery is needed in addition to cancer removal as well.

Cleft lip and palate surgery

Cleft lip and cleft palate are among the most common birth anomalies. Cleft lip repair and cleft palate repair are surgeries used to correct this abnormal development and are meant to restore function to the lips and mouth along with improved appearance. Most clefts can be repaired through specialized plastic surgery and helps to improve your child's ability to eat, speak, hear and breathe.
