BREAST MILK DONATION

Newborn holding mother's hand - Breast milk donation

Help new families get off to a healthy start.

Breast milk donation provides nutrition to infants who are ill and whose mother’s cannot provide milk for them.

Marshfield Medical Center accepts breast milk donation from mothers who have an excess supply of breast milk. These donations go to our milk depot.

What is a milk depot?

A milk depot is a controlled collection point for women to donate their excess breast milk.

Before a donation is accepted, we draw the donor’s blood for screening. After screening, we store the raw, frozen donor milk, which gets shipped to a milk bank for pasteurization and processing.

The milk bank then dispenses the milk across the country to infants who are premature or have severe illness.

Who can donate milk?

A good candidate is a mother who is lactating and has a surplus of milk beyond their baby’s needs. They are also:

  • In good general health
  • A non-smoker
  • Not regularly using any medications

To learn more about becoming a milk donor, call Marshfield Medical Center Lactation Services at 715-389-3903.
