In Memoriam

Marshfield Clinic mourns the loss of C. Todd Stewart, M.D., who died unexpectedly on July 1 in Chicago. He was 48.

Dr. Stewart, a pediatric intensive care physician, served as vice president of the Clinic. He was also involved in numerous leadership initiatives, including the Governance, Government Relations and Development committees. He and his wife, Janet, were also active supporters of Clinic fundraising activities, primarily to benefit children.

"Dr. Todd Stewart was a remarkable leader, caring physician and dear friend to many," said Chief Development Officer Teri Wilczek. "Todd and Janet were philanthropic leaders motivated to give back and make a difference.  Todd supported many impactful initiatives including Fore the Kids, Project Shine, the Laird Center for Medical Research, Auction of Champions and more.

"Todd was passionate about the Clinic and worked tirelessly to advance our mission.  He was a caring person who took the time to really get to know his colleagues.  I will always remember his kindness, fun-loving personality and terrific smile."

David Meissner, co-organizer of Fore the Kids, said of Dr. Stewart, "We had a dream and he was there to help direct our efforts.  The Child Advocacy Center was the first of many projects we worked on together. Because of Dr. Stewart's guidance, our relationship with the Marshfield Clinic Pediatrics Department continues to this day.  Dr. Stewart's passion for children's health has made a profound and everlasting impact on our lives."

David's wife, Tammy, also mourned the loss of "a compassionate physician and dear friend.  We shared hopes, dreams and a vision for the future.  Fore the Kids will continue to build on the foundation Dr. Stewart helped us to create.   Our journey is now guided by yet another angel."

In an article published in BenchMarks in early 2012, Dr. Stewart spoke of his ability to balance work and life in Marshfield.

"Marshfield has been a wonderful place to raise our family," he said. "Our children have grown into remarkable adolescents and a lot of that has to do with the environment living in Marshfield."

Earlier in his career, he and Janet lived in Chicago, which was fine when they didn't have children. "But I didn't want to be one of those dads who, 20 years too late, sees his daughter and says,' who is that woman?' At the Clinic, I could have a challenging career and practice high quality medicine but still be home for dinner, and get to soccer games and piano recitals."

In addition to his wife, Dr. Stewart is survived by two children, daughter Devon, 17, and his son, Nick, 14.
