Marshfield Clinic is incredibly grateful for the generosity of each volunteer. Each month the Development Department selects a volunteer to feature in recognition of the dedication and service they bring to Marshfield Clinic’s philanthropic efforts. No matter the level of experience, the most important qualities are enthusiasm and a giving spirit.
Featured Volunteers: Al and Amy Nystrom - Mike's Run
Al and Amy Nystrom have been involved with many community events, but one is near and dear to their hearts.
Mike's Run honors Al's close childhood friend, while also raising funds to bring awareness of mental health problems to the public. Al, his wife Amy, and their children, Brad and Danielle, have been actively involved in planning this event from day one.
After Mike Hackman ended his battle with mental illness, Al teamed up with Marshfield Clinic to create an event that speaks out against this stigmatized issue.
Proceeds from the event benefit mental health services at Marshfield Clinic, such as family resources, support groups and new treatment options. The money raised helps fund "Invisible Signs of Suicide" a program featuring James Mazza, Ph.D., a psychology professor at the University of Washington.
Dr. Mazza, a life-long friend of Mike Hackman, came back to his hometown to give a dynamic presentation on suicide awareness in children and young adults.
The program made an impact on everyone attending, but none more so than Amy Nystrom. "It was very humbling and touched a personal place in my heart for my friend who had suffered for so long," she said.
In addition to Mike's Run, Al and Amy Nystrom have participated in many events such as Auction of Champions and Fore the Kids. They have been role models for their children and the community. Marshfield Clinic is honored to share their dedication and thank them for their service.
